It is recognized that running on the Interstate by the bicycle is generally illegal.
I was not running on this road for a while though it was a shortcut on the map.
But on a certain day I tried to ride on this road because I couldn't find another way.
As a matter of fact, it's possible to ride on this road and much more comfortable than a general road.
When I experience this road even once I cannot become a nature to go back to the general road because the shoulder is much bigger and there is the fair wind that made by the big trucks.
finally I was on this road about 70% when I was in U.S.
- The patrol car went away without a remark in many cases though I saw many times.
- In the morning when I slept on the road side a policeman said to me that you can't sleep here but didn't say that you can't ride here.
- I saw a sign that say to cyclists "narrow shoulder in this tunnel" in Oregon.
- A policeman said to me on I70 that runs from east to west in the south of Utah; "Are you all right?" "Don't worry! I just check that you are O.K." "I won't get in the way of your ride."
- When I entered a base of the army while going from Los Angeles to San Diego, a soldier said to me "You should ride on the Interstate until the next town, there is no other road"
As for me, it doesn't seem to be illegal no matter how it thinks.
However, when the city and the town are overcrowded, the exits appears frequently, and traffic increases, it becomes a illegal at once to ride on the Interstate.
The boundary of this illegal part and lawful part is too vaguely. It was noted five times in total by the police in my case.
Especially, it is reported at once recently because the spread of the cellular phone is remarkable.
In short, it is illegal if it's near the big city or if there are another road. Then, when there are no other road or if it's in country side, it is lawful.
However, I can do nothing but start in the bet because the borderline is not clear.
I am not running with a detailed map and I'm not a local.
Fortunately the U.S. police doesn't take a coercive attitude like Japanese police.
When I ask to them like "well, where can I ride?" they draw a map and teach me politely.
The conclusion: Go ahead until you are noted by the police.

REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) is a huge outdoor multiple store that develops with American whole land.
ref: After one and a half years openings, it has been transferred to the enterprise in Japan though there was a store also in Tokyo.
The guarantee system here is indeed wonderful.
I had bought the tent, GPS and some things in the online shop of this REI before I left Japan.
After I used this tent about 10 times, one of the pole had been curved with strong wind one night.
I brought this pole to a store of REI which was located to be the nearest in Salt Lake City. And they said to me "It should be no problem. However, if you worry about it, it is possible to return it for a replacement or a refund by the customer service." I withdrew once with their opinion.
However, I was still anxious.
After I exchanged e-mail several times with customer service, it came to exchange it in a store of REI in San Diego.
When I got to San Diego, I went to the store immediately, and offered to the customer service, "I want to return goods". Then, processing was quickly started without hearing the reason.
I admired because they refund to me without asking me the reason why I want to return it.
I heard they accept that we return it for a replacement or a refund if we aren't satisfied with it however it's neither broken nor troubled.
I heard that there are some peoples who buy the complete outdoor gears for weekend camping and they returned it after the camping because they are not satisfied with it.
I thought that it was too awful though I was not able to judge others.
Finally I got a new tent that is much lighter and cheaper than original one, also some cash.
